Common questions

How do I record?

Hold the red ● key until it latches with a clunk, then talk. Press ● again (or ■) to stop. A short tap won't start a recording, so the phone in your pocket can't start one either.

Where are my recordings?

On your iPhone or iPad, one cassette per day. Tap LIBRARY to see the shelf of tapes; tap a tape to load it, share its words or erase it.

Are my tapes backed up?

If iCloud Drive is on, Tape Journal keeps a copy in a “Tape Journal” folder in your own iCloud Drive, a few seconds after every change. In the app, open the settings door: the label says when the copy was last saved. We have no servers; the copy is in your iCloud only.

I have a new iPhone, or I installed the app again

Sign in to the same iCloud account with iCloud Drive on, and open Tape Journal. Your tapes come back on their own as they download; the page says when they are back.

Can I delete the copy in iCloud?

Erasing a tape in the app erases its copy too. To remove the whole copy, delete the “Tape Journal” folder in the Files app (iCloud Drive), or under Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage. Turning Tape Journal off under Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Drive stops the copy; it doesn't delete it.

The words are in the wrong language

Open the settings door and set LANGUAGE (EN-IN, EN-US or Auto). The words for a recording come from Apple's on-device speech recognition; the first time, iOS may need a moment to download the language.

I don't see SUMMARY

Day summaries are written by Apple Intelligence on your device. Where Apple Intelligence isn't available or is turned off, the SUMMARY key is hidden and titles come from your own words.
